DES MOINES, IOWA — Registration is now open for the second annual Tech Journey Open, a central Iowa golf outing raising money to support Tech Journey and provide scholarships to students participating in the Tech Camp program.
This year’s Tech Journey Open will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022 at Beaver Creek Golf Course with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start. Last year’s inaugural event raised over $19,600. This money was used to support the Tech Journey organization as a whole and also provide Tech Camp scholarships to nine high school seniors.
Tech Camp is an immersive summer program focused on educating, inspiring and connecting individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups in the tech space with local professionals. The weeklong camp has different learning tracks covering a range of technology topics such as software development, hardware and physical computing and web development and media.
Tech Journey Executive Director, Tim Sieber, said, “Tech Camp provides a really unique opportunity for central Iowa students to learn about opportunities within the technology industry. Our goal is to engage and support students from traditionally underserved populations within the tech industry including females, minority groups and those with socioeconomic challenges. The money raised from the Tech Journey Open helps us further students’ interest in technology-related fields. It’s really amazing to watch as these students uncover passions and interests they didn’t know existed and build confidence in an area they may not have focused on
previously.”
Des Moines-based Lean TECHniques, a software and IT consultancy, is the presenting sponsor and main organizer of the Tech Journey Open. Danielle Brommer, Lean TECHniques Partner, said, “Tech Journey is such an important organization in our community. Through their work, they’re opening doors for students who otherwise might not get the chance to learn that they have a passion for technology. We know that the best solutions come when you can bring people together who have different backgrounds and perspectives. And as an employer, we want to have as diverse of a workforce as possible. Tech Journey is helping inspire the next generation and connect them with organizations like ours who can support, mentor and, ideally one day, even hire them. We’re excited to see what impact we can make for Tech Journey as we come together with others in the Iowa tech community to support such a great cause.”
